Eccles Theater: Main Street's stage for Broadway and concerts
The Eccles Theater is downtown Salt Lake City’s modern performance hall on Main Street, built around a five story glass lobby and an outdoor terrace with mountain views. The 2,500 seat Delta Performance Hall stages touring Broadway productions and concerts, while the smaller Regent Street Black Box hosts local dance, theater, film, and music. City Center TRAX station is within walking distance, and a show ticket doubles as a same day transit pass.
About the Eccles Theater
On Main Street in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, the Eccles Theater opens into a five story glass lobby lit by distinctive chandeliers, with colorful balustrades and a striking terrazzo floor underfoot. An outdoor terrace runs the length of the building, giving visitors a place to step outside before a show or at intermission and take in views of the city skyline and the Oquirrh Mountains. Pieces from the Salt Lake County Visual Art collection are on display throughout the building, so even the walk to your seat becomes part of the experience.
The building holds two very different stages under one roof. The 2,500 seat Delta Performance Hall is the main house, home to the Zions Bank Broadway at the Eccles series of touring Broadway productions as well as the Live! at the Eccles series of concerts, comedy, and other large scale events. Down the hall, the smaller Regent Street Black Box gives local dance, theater, film, and music groups a flexible space of their own, so the calendar mixes national tours with homegrown Salt Lake City performances. A touring musical typically fills an evening, so plan on arriving with enough time to find parking, pick up will call tickets, and settle in before curtain.
Getting there is easiest by TRAX. City Center Station on the Green and Blue Lines sits within walking distance of the theater, and a show ticket doubles as a full fare UTA transit pass for buses, TRAX, FrontRunner, and UTA On Demand on the day of the performance, so many visitors skip the drive altogether. Those who do drive will find metered street parking nearby along with downtown parking garages and lots within a few blocks. Because the Eccles Theater sits right on Main Street, it is also an easy walk from most downtown Salt Lake City hotels and from the restaurants that line the surrounding blocks, so a pre show dinner is simple to work into the evening.
The theater is built to welcome a wide range of visitors. Wheelchair accessible entrances, parking, restrooms, and seating are available throughout, and assisted listening devices can be picked up free of charge at the Patron Services and coat check counters. Eccles Theater is also the only one of Salt Lake County’s arts venues that allows food inside the auditorium, as long as it is purchased at the in house concessions stands, which makes it a comfortable stop for families or anyone catching a show after work without time for a full dinner first. Bags larger than twelve by twelve by six inches are not permitted inside either performance space, and there is no storage for oversized items, so it is worth traveling light.
Eccles Theater anchors the newer, glassier end of Salt Lake City’s downtown arts scene, just a few blocks from the Capitol Theatre, the city’s turn of the century house that has been home to Ballet West and Utah Opera since it opened in 1913. Where the Capitol trades in ornate, historic architecture, the Eccles Theater is a contemporary glass and steel build designed for big touring productions and modern concert sound. Together the two theaters, along with the rest of downtown’s restaurants and attractions within walking distance, make it easy to build an entire evening or a full day around a Salt Lake City show.
