Backman Elementary School

Backman Elementary School is a public school in the Salt Lake City School District, located at 601 North 1500 West in the Fairpark neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. The school serves grades Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade and enrolled 396 students during the 2024 to 2025 school year, taught by a staff of 29 classroom teachers, giving Backman one of the lower student to teacher ratios among Salt Lake City elementary schools. Matthew Teitter serves as principal, with Shylah Poirier as assistant principal. The school offers Pre-Kindergarten classes alongside an Extended Learning Program and an After School Program. In November 2025 Backman celebrated the ribbon cutting for the new Backman Community Open Space just across the bridge from the school, a reimagined green space with a playground and outdoor learning areas built with the Salt Lake City School District Education Foundation and the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation.
