Utah State Capitol

Utah State Capitol: Free Tours, Living Government, City Views

The Utah State Capitol sits on a hill above downtown Salt Lake City, where the Legislature still meets and the public is free to explore self-guided or on a guided tour. Inside are the Hall of Governors and rotating art exhibits on Utah history, while the grounds add memorial pathways and, each April, blooming cherry trees. Wide valley views make it a natural stop for a first visit to the city.

About the Utah State Capitol

The Utah State Capitol is a working seat of government on Capitol Hill in Salt Lake City, and it is also open for public visits nearly every day it is in operation. The Utah Legislature’s House and Senate chambers sit inside, alongside the Hall of Governors and rotating exhibits that trace Utah’s history and culture through art, artifacts, and architecture. Because the building still does the work of government, a visit here feels different from a typical museum stop. You are walking through rooms that are actually in use.

Self-guided visits are free and available any time the Capitol is open, letting you set your own pace through the rotunda and public halls. Guided tours run on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, last about 40 to 45 minutes, and gather at the visitor desk near the east entrance, a good option if you want the history and architecture explained as you go. Either way, plan for close to an hour once you add time on the grounds.

The experience changes each year during Utah’s legislative session, a roughly 45-day stretch that opens in January. While lawmakers are in session, the House and Senate chambers are in active use and open to the public, so the building carries a working energy that is not there the rest of the year. Outside session, the pace is quieter and better suited to lingering over the art and architecture. Spring adds its own draw: Yoshino cherry trees planted around the grounds bloom each April and have become a regular stop for family photos.

The grounds are worth treating as their own destination. A memorial pathway loops for about seven tenths of a mile past monuments and statues, including one honoring Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos veterans, and the hilltop setting opens onto wide views of downtown Salt Lake City and the surrounding valley. The lawns and terraces also host weddings, proposals, and public events, so it is common to see the Capitol serving as both government building and event backdrop on the same afternoon.

Public parking lots sit on the east and northeast sides of the complex, with underground parking near the North Capitol Building and street parking around the perimeter where signage allows. The Capitol offers wheelchair accessible entrances, parking, and restrooms, and visitors who need additional accommodations can arrange them in advance through Capitol visitor services. The North Capitol Building also houses the Museum of Utah, and the Pioneer Museum sits just across the street, making Capitol Hill an easy add to a day spent exploring downtown Salt Lake City.
